Awareness Program on Asthma and Dust Allergies
Respiratory diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among children and adults worldwide. Among which Asthma is the leading one. 7th May 2019 is celebrated as the World Asthma Day due to increasing number of patients in the Category. From Jan Seva’s Early childhood care and education (ECCE) medical clinic it has been observed that the highest number of children of ECCE suffer from respiratory problem that is in 2017 there are 263 children and in 2018 there are 352 children. So the CHP team organized an in house awareness programme on Asthma and Dust allergy with the ECCE parents to inform them about Asthma and dust allergy. The topics that were discussed were;
• What is Asthma ? • What is Dust Allergy? • What are the relation between Asthma, Dust allergy and Eczema? • What are the causes? • What are the signs and symptoms? • What are the different types? • What are the treatments? • What are the home remedies? • How to warn ourselves and the surrounding about it?
The parents were asked whether they or their children suffered from Asthma or not. It was found 20 parents had Asthma and their children also suffered from Asthma and 19 parents had dust allergy. The parents were also asked to share their knowledge regarding the matter. One of the parents shared that when he has Dust allergy he follows the home remedies like putting water on his neck and eyes and sit upright to reduce the problem and it works. Some parents said by giving oxygen their child feels better. The parents also asked their queries regarding the topic. A flipchart was presented to show them the different topic related pictures so that they could understand better. At the end of the session Masks were distributed to each parent for their children.
A short term evaluation was done regarding the discussion to understand the knowledge gained by the parents.
OBJECTIVE: IMPROVED KNOWLEDGE ON ASTHMA AND DUST ALLERGY TARGET: 107 REACHED: 101
It was found that 98 parents know the difference about Asthma and general breathing problem. 101 people know about the causes. 100 respondents know the signs and symptoms, 103 parents could answer whether to lie down during asthma attack or sit straight, 104 know whom to inform about the problem.
